What is E-Verify, and Why Should I Use It for My Company?


E-Verify is an electronic way of checking an individual’s employment eligibility. This process is voluntary for a lot of employers, but for many others, it’s mandatory. Does your company have contracts (or subcontracts) with the government? Do those contracts contain the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) clause? In the U.S., it is unlawful to knowingly hire or continue the employment of unauthorized workers. The IRCA, or Immigration Reform and Control Act, requires employers to authenticate a new-hire’s eligibility status by completing the Form I-9 and viewing the documents provided by the new-hire. E-Verify takes this process a step further by comparing the information that the new-hire has provided on the Form I-9 to data from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Social Security Administration (SSA).
